MJA Spring Salon Series: Music and the Psyche
Presented by Laura Coale
Saturday, May 16, 2026 | 2:00–4:00 PM
Carondelet Center, St. Paul, MN
“Music certainly has to do with the collective unconscious… Music expresses in sounds what fantasies and visions express in visual images.”
— C. G. Jung, Letters, Vol. I (1973), p. 542
During this experiential workshop, we will explore how the Psyche/Soul communicates through music as a means of guidance on the individuation path. Participants will become curious about how to fine-tune their whole selves to better receive the gifts of music, expression, and meaning offered by the psyche.
Rather than focusing on musical skill or performance, this workshop invites participants into personal and collective exploration, including:
- How music has shaped one’s life
- What story the Psyche/Soul wishes to tell through music
- How music connects us
- How music carries us through hardship and supports healing and transformation
Because one of our goals as a board is to cultivate engagement and community, this workshop will be interactive, incorporating music, movement, storytelling, personal reflection, and group dialogue.
About the Presenter

Laura Coale is a professional opera and choral singer, private voice teacher, and Jungian Life Coach in the Plymouth, MN area. She sings regularly with the Minnesota Opera Chorus and serves as alto section leader for Chorus Polaris and Holy Family Catholic Church.
From a young age, Laura experienced singing as both a gift and a connection to a greater power and understands vocal training as a metaphor for inner psychological work. A profound dream in 2020 led her deeper into myth, dreamwork, and Jungian psychology through the works of Joseph Campbell and C. G. Jung.
She completed multiple Jung Platform courses in dreamwork, anima/animus, journaling for the soul, and Tarot from a Jungian perspective, and received her certification as a Jungian Life Coach in Fall 2024. Laura is currently training to become an Alexander Technique Teacher, integrating music, depth psychology, and somatic awareness as pathways toward wholeness.
