The title of this talk could also be “The Dark Shadow of Democratization”. Anxiety is the watchword of everyday life, and the more so in the political life of the US, but not only the US. Anxiety, like Mercurius, takes many forms and plays many tricks: aggression, passivity, and any manner of rationalization and intellectualization. Anxiety is nothing more than fear, but of that which in its particularity has been lost to consciousness. Anxiety signals the threatening return of the repressed. The lecture, and the workshop that follows on Saturday, will  examine some of the psychological sources of present political, cultural and religious  anxiety, and will expose to view some of what has been repressed.
